Nottingham Forest's return to European football at the City Ground after nearly three decades ended in heartbreak as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Danish side FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League on October 2, 2025.
Despite a promising start and a spirited second-half performance, Forest were undone by poor defending—particularly from set pieces. Midtjylland struck first in the 18th minute through Ousmane Diao, capitalizing on Forest’s failure to clear a corner. Dan Ndoye equalized just four minutes later with a well-worked goal, but Forest’s defensive frailties resurfaced as Mads Bech Sørensen restored the visitors’ lead in the 24th minute.
Forest pushed hard in the second half, with substitute Chris Wood having two goals disallowed for offside before finally converting a penalty in stoppage time. However, Midtjylland had already sealed the win with a late counterattack goal from Valdemar Byskov in the 89th minute.
The loss leaves Forest winless in their Europa League campaign so far, following a 2-2 draw against Real Betis in their opening match. Manager Ange Postecoglou, who is yet to secure a win in any competition since taking charge, faced chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from frustrated fans, highlighting the mounting pressure on his tenure.
The away match at Newcastle looks like a make or break for the Forest manager who might not survive beyond 30 days !
